November is Diabetes Awareness Month

Cats are usually diagnosed with type 2 diabetes where the body either produces too little insulin or cannot use the insulin. Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas that helps to push glucose into the cat’s cells to provide the body with energy.

Without it, glucose levels rise in the blood and cause the clinical signs we see. Because the cat is not able to process the glucose without insulin, the cells of the body are essentially starved.
