Common Toxic Plants

Plants causing primarily GI signs (vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite):

  • Castor bean
  • Auttumn crocus
  • Mistletoe
  • Christmas rose
  • Daffodil
  • Daphne
  • English holly
  • English ivy
  • Jonquil
  • Iris or flag
  • Jack-in-the-pulpit
  • Narcissus
  • Philodendron
  • Poinsettia
  • Rosary pea or precatory bean
  • Wisteria

Plants causing primarily CNS signs (seizures or abnormal behaviour):

  • Angel’s trumpet
  • Moonseed
  • Bleeding Heart
  • Morning glory

Plants causing cardiovascular signs (often preceded or accompanied by gastrointestinal signs):

  • Azalea
  • Lily of the valley
  • Oleander
  • Yew

Plants causing kidney damage:

  • Daylily
  • Lily (including Easter lily, tiger lily)
  • Rhubarb

Plants causing nonspecific signs involving GI, CNS, and cardiovascular systems:

  • Golden chain
  • Yellow jessamine
